How to make a Snowflake Ojo

The snowflake ojo looks festive when made with red and green yarn, as shown above. You will need nine 1/2-inch dowels, six of them 6 inches long and three 18 inches long; 1 ounce each of four-ply knitting worsted in kelly green, light green, red, maroon, and flesh-color; white glue; and a red felt-tipped marker.

Notch the midpoints of the 18-inch dowels, and glue them together at 60-degree angles; wire and let dry. Make a notch 3 inches from the end of each arm; then notch the midpoints of the six 6-inch dowels and set them aside. Remove the wire, and wrap maroon yarn around the intersection several times. Using a flat wrap, and going around each of the six arms, make an eye that measures 2 inches across. Knot, clip, and glue the yarn. Continuing with a flat wrap, wind three rounds of red yarn. Follow this with nine rounds of flesh-colored yarn, using a recessed wrap. Attach the light green yarn, and flat wrap until the eye is 5 1/4 inches across. Attach the red yarn, and make one flat-wrap round. Attach the kelly green, and with a recessed wrap, wind eight rounds. Continuing with kelly green, flat wrap until the ojo is 7 inches wide. Attach the maroon yarn and flat wrap one round. This completes the center eye.

Matching notches made earlier, attach the six small dowels to the dowel arms at right angles. Glue and wire together, let dry, and remove wire. The six small ojos that surround the center eye are identical and are all made with the flat wrap. Starting with red yarn, make an eye measuring 1 1/4 inches across. Then wrap three rounds of maroon. Attach flesh-color yarn and wrap eight rounds. Follow with two rounds of light green, five of kelly green, and end with one round of maroon.

Using red yarn, cover all exposed dowels between the center eye and each of the six small eyes. Also with red, cover the exposed dowel ends on each of the six small ojos. Make six pompons of kelly green yarn, using a 2 1/2-inch piece of cardboard. Attach these to the ends of the six dowel arms. Using the red marker, color the ends of the six 6-inch dowels. Tie two strands of one pompon together to make a loop for hanging.
