Here’s my entry – Painted Sugar Cookies for your Christmas Tree
Gather family members around the kitchen table to paint their own original designs on these lovely cookie ornaments -
too pretty to eat!
HAND-PAINTED BUTTER COOKIES
1 1/2 c. butter or regular margarine
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. grated lemon rind
4 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt
Cream together butter and sugar in bowl until light and fluffy, using electric mixer at medium speed. Add eggs and lemon rind; beat well. Sift together flour and salt. Gradually add to creamed mixture, mixing well. Cover and chill dough 3 to 4 hours.
Roll out dough on lightly floured surface to 1/8″ thickness. Cut in desired shapes with floured cookie cutters. Place, about 2″ apart, on greased baking sheets.
Bake in 400° oven 6 to 8 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove baking sheets from oven. If cookies will be used as tree decorations, twist a small hole in the top of each cookie with a toothpick. Cool slightly. Remove cookies from baking sheets cool on racks. Makes 6 dozen.
To decorate cookies: Pour food color in small saucers. Add a few drops of water. You can make many beautiful colors by mixing the basic colors. Use narrow brushes for fine lines and wider brushes for large areas. Rinse brush out in water when you change colors so that your colors will be clear and not murky. With colors of your choice, paint your own original designs on the cookies.
To hang cookies on the tree, draw narrow colored cord through the hole in each cookie.

Well now there is something I really would like to do. All I need is the food coloring. Thanks for the great recipe. Great post.
WOW! Those are fabulous! I can’t believe the painting was simply done with just food coloring and water!
Those look so fancy! You must have some real artists in your family!
Of all the ideas I’ve seen so far, painted cookies are unique. What a great idea. This is one I definitely want to try.
These are great. My daughter will love making them.
Stopping by from the Blog Tour! Mine wouldn’t make it to the tree!
