Basic Dough: Cream 1 1/2 cups butter and 2 cups packed brown sugar; add 1 egg. Beat till light. Mix 4 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda. Stir into egg mixture. Cover; chill 2 hours.
